What is Written Practice?
The employer (individual company performing NDT inspections) shall have a written practice that provides information on training and certification of NDT personnel. As per SNT-TC-1A, Claude 9.1 Certification of all NDT Levels is the responsibility of the Employer.

The written practice also establishes the responsibilities of NDT personnel.

The Written Practice shall include the minimum required education, training hours, experience and examinations for certification of NDT personnel.

The written practice should include the course outline that must be covered in the training program.

The employer written practice shall be reviewed and approved by employer NDT level III.

The written practice is prepared based on one of the following documents: ASNT's Recommended Practice SNT-TC-1A, CP-189.

What is SNT-TC-1A, 2011?

SNT-TC-1A is the recommended practice for Qualification and Certification of Nondestructive Testing Personnel. The practice have been stablished by ASNT to provides guidelines for employers to establish in-house certification programs for the qualification and certification of nondestructive testing personnel.

The recommended practice can be modified to meet the employer requirements, and this modifications shall not basic provisions of program such as training experience, testing and recertification.

SNT-TC is for 13 Methods

Not intended to be used as a strict specification


Companies involved in NDT are recommended that they purchase a copy of SNT-TC-1A, 2011from American Society of Nondestructive Testing.

What is CP-89?

This standard establishes the minimum requirement for the qualification and certification of NDT personnel, It details the minimum training, education, and experience requirement for NDT personal & provide criteria for the documenting qualification & Certification.

It requires the employer to establish a procedure for certification of NDT personal.

CP 189 is for 11 Methods.

Minimum requirement for the qualification and certification shall be met.
